1. The need for flea prevention

Cats and fleas

Characteristics of fleas
There are many kinds of fleas, but the one that is the main problem in Japan is the one called "cat fleas." As the name suggests, they are supposed to parasitize cats, but they are actually a nuisance that can also parasitize dogs and people.

Fleas reproduce in the following cycle: egg → larva → pupa → adult. They have a very high reproductive rate, so once they are allowed into your home, their numbers will increase at an astonishing rate.

Adult worms have high jumping ability and jump from the ground or plants onto the body of a dog or cat to parasitize it. Once parasitized, they will continue to parasitize for the rest of their life unless they are forcibly removed. Furthermore, female adult worms suck blood, causing various health problems.
Health hazards caused by flea infestations
[Dermatitis]

An allergic reaction to the flea's saliva causes an itchy condition called "flea allergy dermatitis," characterized by itching and hair loss from the lower back to the base of the tail.

[Transmission of disease]

Fleas also transmit parasites and bacteria, including the gastrointestinal parasite "tapeworm" and the infectious disease "cat scratch disease."

Cat scratch disease is a disease that humans contract when a cat infected with the Bartonella bacteria transmitted by fleas bites a human.

【anemia】

Severe flea infestations can lead to anemia. If the anemia progresses and your pet becomes emaciated, immediate treatment is required.

How to detect flea infestation?
Fleas are tiny, only about 1 to 2 mm in length, so they may be difficult to spot unless you look closely.
If you notice small black flea feces on your pet's fur, it is likely that your pet is infested with fleas. When flea feces are soaked in alcohol or other liquids, the blood components dissolve and the feces turn red.

If you suspect an infestation, it is important to visit a veterinarian as soon as possible and eliminate fleas from your home.
If you have multiple animals, be sure to treat all of them (including rabbits and hamsters).

2. The need for tick prevention

Dog tick prevention

Characteristics of ticks
Ticks are large mites, and adult mites are about 3-8 mm in size, so they can be seen with the naked eye. They change their life cycle depending on the season and remain active all year round. (Spring to summer: adult mites, autumn to winter: eggs → young mites → young mites)

Ticks live in areas with lots of grass, waiting for a host animal on the tips of leaves and stems, so there is a chance of being infested anywhere, such as when you go for a walk or camping.
Like fleas, they have a very strong reproductive ability and also suck blood, causing various health problems.
Health hazards caused by ticks
Ticks can cause redness at the bite site, but they rarely cause widespread dermatitis like fleas do. In rare cases, they can cause allergic reactions, anemia, and tick paralysis (the tick's saliva paralyzes the muscles of dogs and cats).
However, you need to be careful as ticks can transmit dangerous diseases.

Babesiosis is an infection that only affects animals.
Diseases that can infect both humans and animals include severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and Lyme disease.

An example of a disease that can only infect humans is Japanese spotted fever.
Of these, SFTS is a terrible disease whose spread to humans is a problem and there have been reported cases of death.
What to do if you are infested with ticks?
Ticks use their jaws to attach themselves firmly to animals when sucking blood, so if you try to forcefully remove them and the jaws remain, it can cause dermatitis in that area. Furthermore, it is dangerous to touch them carelessly, as they may transmit diseases such as those mentioned above. If you find a tick attached to your pet, we recommend taking it to a veterinary clinic to have it removed properly.

3. How to prevent fleas and ticks

How preventive medicine works
There are flea and tick preventatives that can be taken orally or applied as a spot treatment to the skin. Basically, all of these medications work to prevent infection by eliminating fleas and ticks or by preventing the eggs from hatching.

We recommend the all-in-one type, which also provides heartworm prevention, as you are less likely to forget to take it.

Most preventive medications are administered once a month, but some are administered once every three months.
Try to find a medication that puts the least amount of burden on you as an owner and that you can continue to give your pet without any difficulty!

Timing of prevention
It is said that fleas become less active when the temperature drops below 13°C, but if you bring them indoors, they will continue to be active as long as the room temperature is above 13°C. Also, as mentioned above, ticks remain active all year round. For this reason, it is best to take measures to prevent fleas and ticks all year round.

If you want to prevent heartworm during the mosquito season and fleas and ticks all year round, it may be a good idea to use a flea and tick preventative only during the winter for three months.
