What kind of disease is it?

It is an infectious disease caused by a virus called rabies.
The scary thing about this virus is that it infects all mammals.
Rabies is a terrible disease in which the virus enters the body through the saliva of an animal infected with rabies when bitten, and once symptoms appear, the disease is almost 100% fatal.

Japan has been free of the disease since 1954, but outbreaks still occur in most countries, including neighboring Asian countries!

Data shows that 55,000 people die each year, of which 30,000 are in Asia.
That's why it's so important to take precautions just in case.

What is the Rabies Prevention Act?

There is a law called the Rabies Prevention Law in order to prevent the occurrence and spread of rabies.
Under this law, dogs over 91 days of age must do the following four things:
*If you fail to follow these rules, you may be subject to penalties of up to 200,000 yen!

1. Register with your city or town and receive a license.

②Get a rabies vaccination once a year

③ Receive a "vaccination certificate"

④ Put a license tag and vaccination tag on your dog.

By following these rules, the country will be able to know "where are the dogs and how many there are" and be able to take swift action in the unlikely event that rabies is brought in from overseas.

Why do I have to get the vaccine?

By building up immunity in advance, you can protect your precious dog if a virus is brought in from overseas.

If everyone acquires immunity and develops "herd immunity," the spread of rabies can be prevented even in the unlikely event of an outbreak.

Additionally, 90% of rabies infections worldwide are contracted from dogs.
It is also important to give your dog the appropriate immunity to prevent harm to humans.

2. When and where should I hit it?

Vaccination period

Vaccination is mandatory once a year.
Every year from April to June is designated as the "rabies vaccination period" across the country, and you will receive a postcard from your local government.
Scheduling your vaccination at the appropriate time will make it less likely you'll forget.

Exceptions

If you are traveling abroad or entering Japan from abroad, you will need to get vaccinated in accordance with the rules of the country you are traveling to.
For more information, please check the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries website and consult your veterinarian!
Depending on your destination, you may need to make preparations several months in advance, so make sure you start preparing early!

Also, there may be cases where the veterinarian decides not to vaccinate your pet due to chronic illnesses, etc. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, please consult your veterinarian.

Where you can get vaccinated

The vaccine can be administered at a veterinary clinic or through mass vaccinations administered by local governments.
Vaccinations can generally be administered at veterinary clinics all year round, but please note that mass vaccinations held by local governments are only held at certain times.

What are side effects?

The purpose of vaccines is to induce an immune response in the body and confer immunity against the target pathogen, but in very rare cases they can cause side effects (reactions other than conferring immunity or adverse events caused by the vaccination procedure).

Below are some examples of side effects that may occur in dogs and cats after vaccination:

・Anaphylactic shock (feeling listless, cyanosis, rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, etc. Dangerous!)

Decreased activity

-Swelling of the face

Swelling and pain at the injection site

・Digestive symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.)

Can side effects be avoided?

It is also said that if you have a fever on the day of receiving the vaccine, you are more likely to experience side effects.
To prevent side effects as much as possible, get vaccinated on a day when you are feeling well.

If your pet has had any side effects in the past, be sure to inform your veterinarian beforehand.
In some cases, you may be given anti-inflammatory medication before receiving the vaccine, and there may be increased monitoring after vaccination.

What if I experience side effects?

If any adverse reactions occur immediately after vaccination (such as anaphylactic shock as mentioned above), please consult a veterinarian immediately as this is likely to require emergency treatment.

In addition, please monitor your child closely for about an hour after receiving the vaccine so that you can notice any side effects as soon as possible.

After returning home, keep the dog resting for the rest of the day and keep walks to a minimum.
If you notice any unusual behavior within the first few days after vaccination, contact your veterinarian immediately.
