Hello! There are only a few more days left this year.
From now on, many of you will have opportunities to have people gather at your home or go out with your dogs or cats.

When your pet is in a different environment than usual, you need to be careful to prevent it from eating the wrong thing.
Let's get it organized so you can have a great time!

Bow Wow Place offers a wide variety of foods that contain the nutrients your pet needs to stay healthy. Please use the correct information to help maintain the health of your beloved dog or cat!

1. [For both dogs and cats] Be careful of accidentally ingesting foreign objects

There are lots of things in the home that will interest your dog or cat.
Even if it is not something that will immediately cause poisoning when eaten, it can be life-threatening if it remains in the digestive tract and causes intestinal blockage.
Here are three main ones you should pay particular attention to.

1.1 String

If a string is accidentally swallowed and gets caught in the intestines, the peristaltic movement can pull the intestines together.

The intestines shrink like an accordion, and if left untreated, this can be very dangerous as it can lead to a hole in the intestine.

If a string-like foreign body is suspected, vomiting alone is not sufficient and open abdominal surgery is often necessary.

1.2 Cushions, pet sheets, small balls, etc.

It's not uncommon for them to swallow it while playing around.
Small amounts of cotton are often excreted along with the stool, but hard materials such as urethane or plastic can get stuck in the intestinal tract and cause blockages.

1.3 Something with a sharp tip

Sharp objects such as bamboo skewers, toothpicks, and fishing hooks are very dangerous as they can damage the digestive tract.
Bamboo skewers in particular often have the smell of food permeating them, which can be quite intriguing.
Make sure to keep it out of reach of dogs and cats.

2. [Dogs] Things that cause poisoning in dogs

Next, we will introduce foods that can cause poisoning in dogs.
Here we will explain four of the most representative ones.

2.1 Chocolate

The ingredients contained in chocolate can cause symptoms such as excessive drinking, vomiting, diarrhea, urinary incontinence, excessive excitement, and cyanosis.

These symptoms may appear as early as 2-4 hours after ingesting the chocolate, but no later than 12 hours, and bitter chocolate is more likely to cause poisoning than white chocolate.

Also, because chocolate contains a lot of fat, it can cause acute pancreatitis in addition to poisoning.
Treatment requires vomiting and intravenous drips, so if you have eaten chocolate, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2.2 Xylitol

When dogs ingest xylitol, it can stimulate insulin production, which can lead to hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia can occur within an hour of ingestion, and symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, and convulsions.

Hypoglycemia can be life-threatening, so if you suspect your pet has accidentally ingested xylitol, take them to the vet immediately.

2.3 Green onion

Consuming vegetables classified as Allium, such as leeks, onions, Chinese chives, scallions, and garlic, can destroy the membranes of red blood cells and cause anemia.

It is important to note that the disease can occur even if the food consumed has been cooked or dried.

For example, even drinking the juice from meat and potatoes can cause the disease, which is dangerous! The main symptoms include vomiting, loose stools, decreased activity, dehydration, and red urine, and appear one to several days after ingestion.

It is best to induce vomiting before symptoms appear, so if you suspect your pet has accidentally eaten something, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2.4 Grapes

The main symptom of grape poisoning is acute kidney damage, but the details of what in the grapes causes it are unknown.

However, care should be taken as the disease can occur if the fruit is eaten raw, dried, or with just the skin.

The main symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite, and they usually occur within 24 hours of ingestion.
The amount that causes poisoning varies from person to person, but if it is clear that the person has eaten grapes, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

3. [Cats] Things that cause poisoning in your beloved cat

Finally, we will introduce some of the most common causes of poisoning in cats.

We will not go into detail about some of the issues that overlap with those related to dogs, but we will provide a detailed explanation of lily poisoning, which is specific to cats.

3.1 Chocolate

Chocolate poisoning is the same as it is for dogs. See Chapter 2 for more information.

3.2 Spring onion

Onion poisoning is the same as for dogs. Please see Chapter 2 for details.

3.3 Lily addiction

Lilies are actually highly poisonous to cats.
Even a few leaves or parts of a petal can be deadly and extremely dangerous!

The main symptoms include drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, and decreased level of consciousness, and appear within 1-3 hours after ingestion.

However, kidney damage may occur later, even after these digestive symptoms have subsided, so do not be reassured just because the symptoms have subsided after accidentally ingesting a lily.

Be sure to visit a veterinary clinic.
